MIFARE is a "contact-less" RFID smart-card standard developed by NXP (founded by Philips), under which they manufacture a range of IC's that conform to the ISO standard for smartcard technology, ISO 14443A.
Cards, keyfobs and tags use the NXP MIFARE transponder IC's. NXP IC's are also incorporated into complete MIFARE reader modules such as the ID-20MF.
MIFARE was originally developed as a transport ticketing solution although the technology continued to developed and has since been used in electronic purses, warehouse logisitics, stock control and many other applications.
Information exchanged within a MIFARE system utilizes a unique encryption method to protect the data exchange.
Contactless MIFARE systems are read/write and the size of memory on a card/tag can range from 1kbyte to 4kbytes.
